Scuba Diving

Salt Cay's diving is rated among the best in the Turks and Caicos, which is high praise in an archipelago known for exceptional reef diving. The barrier reef drops from about 12 metres directly into a 2,000-metre wall — dramatic topography with excellent clarity, abundant coral, sea fans, sponges, and fish life including reef sharks, rays, and turtles.

Salt Cay Divers is the island's main dive operation, running small groups on personalised trips. The lack of crowds and boat traffic compared to Providenciales gives the diving here a different quality — quieter, more focused on the underwater environment rather than the resort experience. The HMS Endymion wreck sits in accessible depths and is worth a dedicated dive. Certification courses are available for beginners.

A story
The HMS Endymion, a British warship, sank in a storm in 1790 while carrying a cargo of cannons to the colonial garrisons of the Caribbean. It came to rest in shallow water off Salt Cay and the cannons are still there, half-buried in sand, surrounded by coral and fish. The wreck was designated a protected historic site and is one of the few accessible wreck dives in the Turks and Caicos.
