The West End Beach park on the island's western shore offers the most developed beach experience on Dauphin Island. Two hundred palm trees line the entrance road, and a collection of Balinese-style structures houses food vendors, souvenir shops, and rental equipment for kayaks and paddleboards. Canvas shade structures with misting systems line the sand, and lifeguards are on duty during the summer season.
The west end sits where the island narrows, so you can walk from the Gulf side to the calmer bay side in a few minutes. Anglers fish the bay shore among natural vegetation while swimmers enjoy the Gulf surf on the other side. Entry is charged per vehicle, but walk-ins are free. The beach is least crowded on weekday mornings and most lively on summer weekends when families from Mobile and Pensacola arrive in numbers.
