Rosenbaum House

The only Frank Lloyd Wright building in Alabama, a 1939 Usonian home

Address 601 Riverview Drive, Florence, AL 35630

The Rosenbaum House, completed in 1940 and expanded by Wright himself in 1948, is the only Frank Lloyd Wright building in Alabama and one of the most authentic Usonians in the country. Mildred Rosenbaum lived in the house until 1999; the city of Florence acquired and restored it in 2001 and now operates it as a public museum.

The interior is largely as Wright designed it: cantilevered redwood shelving, geometric clerestory windows, built-in furniture, and the open-plan living-dining-kitchen that Wright considered the Usonian's signature. Tours are by appointment only and last about an hour — book ahead and call to confirm.

A story
Wright designed the Rosenbaum House as a wedding present (commissioned through the parents) for Stanley and Mildred Rosenbaum in 1939. It is one of the purest examples of Wright's Usonian concept — affordable, single-storey, with a flat roof, carport instead of garage, and an L-shaped plan that opens to a private garden.
