Alabama's main gateway is Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, with connections through Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, and Chicago. Huntsville International Airport serves the northern part of the state and has direct flights to several major hubs. Mobile Regional Airport is the option for the Gulf Coast.
Montgomery has a small regional airport, but most travelers flying in will find better connections through Birmingham or Atlanta, which is about two and a half hours east by car.
By road, Interstate 65 runs north-south through the state from Nashville to Mobile, passing through Birmingham and Montgomery. Interstate 20 crosses east-west through Birmingham, connecting to Atlanta and Jackson, Mississippi. Interstate 59 comes in from the northeast through Chattanooga.
Amtrak's Crescent line stops in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa on its route between New York and New Orleans. Greyhound serves the major cities, though schedules are limited.
From the Gulf Coast, the Mobile Bay Ferry connects Dauphin Island to Fort Morgan, a scenic shortcut across the bay mouth.
