Bienville Square

Bienville Square is the heart of downtown Mobile — a handsome, tree-shaded park ringed by historic buildings and the closest thing the city has to a town square. The large live oaks draped in Spanish moss create the kind of shade that becomes essential in the Alabama summer. Surrounding the square are some of Mobile's finest 19th-century commercial buildings, and the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception anchors the south end of the scene.

The square is lively in the evening, particularly during Mardi Gras season when Mobile's carnival culture takes over the surrounding streets. It is the default gathering point for parades, outdoor events, and the spontaneous social life that animates the downtown.

A story
The square is named for Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, who founded Mobile in 1702 and went on to found New Orleans in 1718. Mobile was the first permanent European settlement in present-day Alabama and for a time the most important city in the French Gulf Coast colony.
