USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park

The USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park sits on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay and is one of the more impressive military museums in the South. The centerpiece is the battleship USS Alabama herself, a 35,000-ton South Dakota-class vessel that served in both the Atlantic and Pacific during World War II. Visitors can tour most of the ship, including the gun turrets, crew quarters, combat information centre, and the maze of lower decks.

The park also includes the submarine USS Drum, the oldest American submarine on display in the country, and a large collection of military aircraft from World War II through the Vietnam era. The aircraft pavilion is particularly well-organised. Allow at least half a day to see everything properly.

A story
The Alabama earned nine battle stars in World War II but was never hit by enemy fire. She was nicknamed 'Mighty A' by her crew and 'Lucky A' by those who noted her survival through some of the Pacific War's most intense naval actions.
