The historic terminus of the Alaska Railroad, built in 1942 in a low Art Moderne style. The depot still operates as a working passenger station — trains leave daily in summer for Seward (south) and Talkeetna and Fairbanks (north), running through scenery you cannot see any other way. A short stretch of the original 1923 narrow-gauge line is preserved alongside the building.
Inside, a small exhibition covers the history of the line — built originally to support gold-mining and now central to summer tourism. Even if you are not riding the train, it is worth stopping in to see the building and watch the locomotives come and go.
