Oscar Anderson House

The first wood-frame house in Anchorage, now a tiny museum

Address 420 M St, Anchorage, AK 99501

The first permanent wood-frame house in Anchorage, built in 1915 by a Swedish butcher who arrived during the railroad construction. The Andersons lived here for sixty years; the house was given to the city in 1976 and is now preserved exactly as they left it — original furniture, family photographs, the kitchen stove still in place. It is the only house museum in the city.

The setting on the bluff above Cook Inlet gives a sense of what the original townsite looked like before everything else around it was built. Open summer afternoons; tours run on the hour and last about half an hour.
