Lavelle's Bistro is the closest thing Fairbanks has to fine dining, and it does it with genuine skill rather than pretension. Located downtown on First Avenue, the restaurant occupies a warm, candlelit room that feels almost incongruously civilized for a subarctic frontier town.
The menu changes seasonally and draws on both local Alaskan ingredients and broader American cuisine. Wild salmon, reindeer, and game meats appear alongside well-executed steaks and pasta dishes. The wine list is surprisingly deep for Interior Alaska. Entrees run $30-50. This is where Fairbanks locals go for anniversaries and special occasions, and it is worth dressing up slightly for. Reservations are essential on weekends and during summer tourist season.
