Fairbanks is a car town. The city is spread out across a broad river valley, and most attractions beyond downtown require driving. Rental cars are available at the airport and are essential if you plan to explore the surrounding area — the Chena Hot Springs Road, the Steese Highway, or the Dalton Highway.
The Metropolitan Area Commuter System (MACS) runs a limited bus network covering downtown, the university, and shopping areas along the major corridors. Service is infrequent by city standards but functional. Routes run Monday through Saturday; there is no Sunday service.
Downtown Fairbanks is walkable in summer — Golden Heart Plaza, the restaurants along the river, and the historic buildings on Cushman Street are all within a manageable radius on foot. In winter, walking any distance is inadvisable when temperatures drop below -20°C.
Taxis and rideshare services exist but are limited. Uber operates in Fairbanks but availability can be spotty, especially late at night.
