Alaska Highway

For most visitors, Tok is less a place than a milepost on the Alcan. The town exists because the Tok Cut-Off branches off here toward Anchorage, and the highway carries on toward Delta Junction and Fairbanks. If you are driving the route in either direction, this is where the Yukon ends and Alaska finally begins to feel real.

The visitor center has displays on the highway's construction and the Black soldiers of the 93rd, 95th, and 97th Engineer Regiments who built the toughest northern sections under brutal conditions. Pick up a Milepost guide, set your trip meter, and remember that 1,387 miles is longer than it looks on a map.

A story
Tok sits at Mile 1314 of the Alaska Highway, the 1,387-mile road originally punched through the wilderness in eight months in 1942 to defend the territory after Pearl Harbor. The original gravel route has been straightened and paved many times since, but you can still see traces of the wartime alignment outside town.
