The visitor center on the Alaska Highway is the obvious first stop in town. Inside there are interpretive displays on the local Athabascan culture, the construction of the Alaska Highway during World War II, and the wildlife of the upper Tanana valley. Staff hand out maps, road condition updates, and advice for travellers heading deeper into Alaska or back into the Yukon.
The building itself is built from logs, the parking lot is generous, and the bathrooms are clean — three things long-haul drivers learn to appreciate. Pick up a Milepost guide here if you have not already, and ask about current wildfire smoke or road closures before pressing on.
