Hermit's Rest

Mary Colter stone rest house and trail gateway at the end of Hermit Road

Hermit's Rest is the stone rest house at the western end of Hermit Road on the South Rim, designed by Mary Colter in 1914 to look as if it grew out of the canyon rock. Its rough masonry, enormous fireplace, and low profile are deliberate: Colter wanted architecture that intensified the landscape rather than competed with it.

It is also a practical endpoint. The Rim Trail and shuttle route finish here, and the Hermit Trail begins a short walk away for serious hikers heading below the rim. Even if you only ride the shuttle and look out from the terrace, Hermit's Rest is one of the best combinations of Grand Canyon view, architecture, and trailhead atmosphere.
