The first overlook most visitors see when entering the park from the south entrance, and for good reason — the view is vast and the access is easy. From the paved walkway above the rim, the canyon spreads in both directions, with the Colorado River visible as a silver thread thousands of metres below. Named after Stephen Mather, the first director of the National Park Service.
Sunrise and sunset at Mather Point are exceptional: the canyon walls change color dramatically, moving through purple, orange, and gold as the angle of the light shifts. It is busy at sunrise but never as crowded as the view deserves. A short walk south along the rim trail connects to Yavapai Point, where the Yavapai Geology Museum explains the canyon's extraordinary rock layers — some dating back nearly two billion years.
