Boothill Graveyard sits at the north edge of town and is free to visit. The 250-odd graves from Tombstone's boom years (1879–1884) tell the town's story more vividly than any museum: gunshot victims, miners killed in cave-ins, gamblers, lawmen, outlaws, and the occasional innocent bystander. The three Cowboys killed at the O.K. Corral — Billy Clanton, Frank McLaury, and Tom McLaury — are buried here in a common plot.
The headstones range from solemn to darkly comic. One reads: "Here lies Lester Moore / Four slugs from a .44 / No Les, no more." The graveyard was abandoned when Tombstone's fortunes collapsed and later restored; some markers are reproductions, but the graves themselves are original. Go early in the morning when the tour buses haven't arrived yet and the desert light is best.
