Schieffelin Hall

Schieffelin Hall was built in 1881 and named after Ed Schieffelin, the prospector whose silver strike in 1877 brought Tombstone into existence. The two-story adobe building is the largest surviving adobe structure in the American Southwest — a claim that understates how impressive it is in person. The hall served as the main entertainment venue for Tombstone's boom years, hosting plays, operas, dances, and political meetings.

The building is not always open to the public but is impressive from the outside, and its sheer scale gives a sense of how ambitious Tombstone's founders were. A town that expected to last built a proper opera hall; the fact that it did last, against all odds, means the hall survived too.
