Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the most comfortable times to visit Fort Smith, with mild temperatures suited to walking the historic sites and the riverfront trail. Summers are hot and humid, often topping 37°C (100°F) in July and August. Winters are mild by northern standards but can bring ice storms that close roads. The Arkansas–Oklahoma State Fair runs in late September, and the Fort Smith Peacemakers music festival draws good crowds in May.
