Beech Street Brick Street

A short stretch of Beech Street on the Arkansas side still has its original red-brick paving from the 1910s, when most American downtowns were laid in brick before asphalt took over. The Beech Street Brick Street is listed on the National Register and runs for a few blocks through a residential neighbourhood of late-Victorian houses.

Drive it slowly: the bricks have settled unevenly over a century, and the ride is more interesting than smooth. It is one of those small civic details that local historians fought to preserve, and Texarkana is better for it.
