Texarkana straddles the border of Texas and Arkansas — literally. State Line Avenue runs through downtown, and you can stand with one foot in each state at Photographers Island. The U.S. Post Office and Courthouse sits directly on the line, making it the only federal building in the country in two states at once. The novelty is genuine fun, and the photo opportunity at the state line marker is obligatory.
Beyond the border gimmick, Texarkana is a modest Southern city with a few draws. The Perot Theatre, a beautifully restored 1924 movie palace, hosts touring shows. The city is also the birthplace of Scott Joplin, and a downtown mural commemorates the ragtime composer. The Ace of Clubs House, shaped like a playing card and built on poker winnings, is the city's most surprising piece of architecture.
