Zankou Chicken

Zankou Chicken in the Glendale–Burbank area is a local institution and one of the best fast-casual meals in the region. The rotisserie chicken is cooked until the skin crisps and the meat falls off the bone, and the white garlic sauce — an Armenian toum made with an intensity that few can match — is what people drive across the city for. Order the whole chicken combo with hummus, pita, and pickled turnips.

This is affordable, genuinely excellent food with no pretension. The original Glendale location on San Fernando Road is a short drive from downtown Burbank, and there are other branches across Los Angeles. Go at lunchtime on a weekday when the chicken is freshest from the spit.

A story
Zankou Chicken was founded in 1984 by Mardiros Iskenderian, an Armenian immigrant who brought his family's garlic sauce recipe from Beirut. The restaurant became a Los Angeles institution through word of mouth alone — no advertising, just an extraordinary product. The garlic sauce (toum) is made from a recipe so guarded that only family members know it.
