Burlingame Museum of Pez Memorabilia

The world's most comprehensive collection of Pez dispensers, in a small storefront on Californiia Drive

The Burlingame Museum of Pez Memorabilia is exactly what it sounds like — a small, lovingly maintained collection of Pez candy dispensers displayed in a storefront on California Drive, around the corner from the Caltrain station. Gary Doss opened it in 1999 after his private collection outgrew his house.

The collection spans the full history of Pez from the 1950s to the present, including rare prototypes, international variants never sold in the United States, and vintage dispensers in mint condition. There are character dispensers representing decades of pop culture — from early Mickey Mouse to recent Star Wars figures — and enough context about Pez corporate history to understand why each era's dispensers look the way they do.

It is a small museum — you can see everything in 30–45 minutes — but it is run with genuine enthusiasm and surprising depth of knowledge. Admission is a few dollars; the gift shop sells current and vintage Pez. Worth a stop if you have a layover at SFO and want something to do besides the airport shops.

A story
Gary Doss started collecting Pez dispensers in 1986 and eventually amassed a collection so large it needed its own building. The museum now holds over 1,000 dispensers, including extremely rare prototypes never released to the public, and one of the original Pez brick dispensers from the 1950s when the candy was marketed as a cigarette substitute for adults. The collection is insured for millions.
