Roaring Camp Railroads

Narrow-gauge steam railway climbing through redwood forest from Felton.

Roaring Camp Railroads runs steam trains from Felton into the redwoods, and it is touristy in the right way. The ride is slow, noisy, and atmospheric, with the smell of oil and wood smoke adding more to the experience than any narration could.

Check the schedule before building a day around it, especially outside summer and holiday periods. Families will get the most from it, but anyone with a weakness for old railways should make time.

A story
The railroad uses narrow-gauge equipment because the tight curves and steep grades into the Santa Cruz Mountains would have been awkward for standard-gauge trains. That quirk is part of why the ride still feels like a mountain railway rather than a theme-park loop.
