La Jenelle Park and Shipwreck

At the southern end of Hollywood Beach, the Oxnard breakwater incorporates a peculiar secret: rusted metal protruding from the concrete is the remains of the ocean liner La Jenelle, a 12,500-ton vessel that capsized offshore in 1971. The ship was being towed to a new life as a floating hotel when the operation went wrong, and the hulk was eventually used as raw material for the harbor infrastructure.

The park itself is a pleasant stretch of beach access with views toward the Channel Islands on clear days. The breakwater walk at low tide reveals the most of the ship remains. It is not a dramatic sight — just a few corroded steel ribs — but the story makes the walk worth taking.

A story
The La Jenelle was a 12,500-ton ocean liner that capsized on 16 October 1971 while being towed from Santa Barbara. The ship was being relocated for use as a floating hotel and casino — a plan that ended badly when strong currents got the better of the tow. Salvage proved uneconomical, so much of the hull was removed and used as breakwater material at Hollywood Beach.
