Oxnard is a working-class port city on the Ventura County coast, better known among locals than tourists — which is part of its appeal. The coastline here is genuinely impressive: broad sandy beaches at Hollywood Beach and Silver Strand stretch for miles without the crowds of Malibu or Santa Barbara. Behind them, Channel Islands Harbor gives the town its character, a proper working harbor where fishing boats share the water with kayakers and whale-watching charters.
The Channel Islands Maritime Museum, one of the better maritime collections on the West Coast, anchors the harbor's cultural side. Offshore, Channel Islands National Park — five rugged islands with excellent hiking, kayaking, and diving — is most easily reached by ferry from Oxnard's harbor, making the city a practical base for visiting the park.
The 31-mile Pacific Coast Bike Route threads through Oxnard, Port Hueneme, and Ventura, following the shoreline with the Santa Monica Mountains visible to the south and the Santa Ynez Range to the north. Downtown, the Carnegie Art Museum occupies the city's 1906 Carnegie library and holds a strong collection of California plein-air painting — an unexpected pleasure in an industrial port city.
