Tulare County Museum

County history museum in Mooney Grove Park's oak groves

Located inside Mooney Grove Park, this county museum covers the full sweep of Tulare County history — Native American basketry, Gold Rush artifacts, Dust Bowl photographs, and exhibits on the waves of immigrants who shaped the valley. The Native American basket collection is particularly impressive. The park itself, with its ancient oaks and picnic areas, is worth a visit in its own right.

Outside the museum stands a full-size replica of James Earle Fraser's "End of the Trail" bronze — the famous 1915 sculpture of an exhausted warrior slumped on his horse, which became one of the most reproduced images of the American West. The original marble model lives in a museum in Oklahoma; this cast in Mooney Grove is one of the better places to see the work at scale, in an outdoor setting that suits it.
