Folsom is 32 kilometres northeast of Sacramento on US Highway 50. By car from Sacramento the drive takes 30–40 minutes depending on traffic.
Sacramento Regional Transit's light rail Gold Line runs from downtown Sacramento directly to the Historic Folsom station at the end of Sutter Street. The journey takes about an hour and costs a few dollars; it is a practical and car-free way to visit the historic district for the day. Trains run every 15–30 minutes during the day.
Sacramento International Airport (SMF) is the nearest airport, about 55 kilometres west of Folsom via US-50. There is no direct public transit link from the airport to Folsom; a rental car or taxi/rideshare is the practical option.
