Historic Sutter Street

Gold Rush-era main street lined with antique shops and restaurants

The three blocks of old Sutter Street form the heart of historic Folsom. The stone and brick buildings date from the Gold Rush and subsequent decades, and many still house independent shops, antique dealers, and restaurants. It is one of the better-preserved Gold Country main streets — compact enough to walk in an hour, characterful enough to deserve more time.

Look for the granite construction typical of the region: the local quarry, worked by Folsom State Prison inmates well into the twentieth century, produced stone for buildings across California. The street is also the light rail terminus, making it unusually easy to arrive without a car. The Folsom Chamber of Commerce at 200 Wool Street can provide a walking tour map.
