Saint Sava Church stands on a hilltop on the north side of town, a small wooden church with a single onion-domed cupola that gives Jackson an unexpectedly Balkan silhouette. The Serbian Orthodox community that built it traces back to the Gold Rush, when Serbian miners and traders settled along the Mother Lode; the parish was founded in 1894 and the building consecrated the same year.
The interior is decorated with icons donated by the original community and successive generations. Visitors are welcome at services and on the annual Slavski Sabor (St Sava day, late January), when the small church is packed with worshippers, traditional Serbian food is served outside, and folk dance performances continue into the evening.
