Jackson is small and most of its sights can be done on foot in a half day. The downtown historic district is a few blocks of late-19th-century brick and false-front buildings, and the major Gold Rush attraction — the Kennedy Mine with its enormous tailing wheels — is just on the edge of town. The surrounding hills hold Native American grinding-rock sites, more historic mining towns, and the Shenandoah Valley wine country.
