Nevada Brewery (Old Stone Brewery)

1856 stone brewhouse — one of the oldest surviving industrial buildings in the Gold Country

Address 107 Sacramento St, Nevada City, CA

The Nevada Brewery on Sacramento Street is a thick-walled stone structure built in 1856, making it one of the oldest surviving industrial buildings in the Gold Country. It operated as a brewery through the late 19th century, then passed through various uses before ending up as a restaurant and bar — the Atlas Obscura listing calls it the "Old Stonehouse Brewery," and it's a reliable spot for a drink.

The building's appeal is partly just that it's still standing. Stone construction was rare in early California towns (most burned down with appalling regularity), and the heavy German-immigrant craft that went into the Nevada Brewery kept it intact through floods, fires, and 170 years of Gold Country history. The cellar, carved into the hillside for natural cooling, is now a seating area that gives the place a genuinely subterranean atmosphere.
