Erick Schat's Bakkery

Erick Schat's Bakkery on Main Street is the most famous institution in Bishop and a genuine institution for anyone passing through the Owens Valley. The Dutch bakery has been here since 1938 and is known across the American West for its sheepherder's bread — a dense, substantial sourdough loaf in the Basque tradition that keeps well on the trail.

The bakery also produces a wide range of pastries, sandwiches, and savoury items. It is open early and serves as the default morning stop for everyone heading into the mountains. The line can be long on weekends in summer; it moves quickly. Buy the bread, buy a pastry, pick up supplies. There is nothing fancy about it but it is exactly what a mountain base camp town needs.

A story
The bakkery (the Dutch spelling is deliberate — founder Erick Schat was Dutch) has been operating since 1938 and is famous primarily for its sheepherder's bread, a sourdough loaf in the Basque tradition that became a staple of the Owens Valley. The bakery produces around 10,000 loaves a week for a town of 3,800 people, and the difference has to go somewhere — it ships nationwide and supplies outdoor outfitters as far away as Los Angeles.
