Heavenly is the big-name ski mountain above South Lake Tahoe, spreading across the California-Nevada state line with long groomers, tree runs, and some of the clearest lake views in the Sierra. The gondola rises straight from the casino-and-lodging strip, which makes it one of the easiest Tahoe resorts to reach without a car once you are in town.
The skiing is broad rather than intimate: multiple base areas, a lot of intermediate terrain, and enough high, windy traverses that weather can change the feel of the day quickly. Non-skiers can still ride the gondola to the observation deck for the panorama over Lake Tahoe. It is commercial and busy, but it is also one of the signature winter experiences on the south shore.
