Things to Do

Lake Tahoe's activities divide cleanly by season. In winter the surrounding mountains host some of California's best skiing; in summer the lake itself is the attraction — swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, and hiking through granite terrain above the tree line. The drive around the lake (72 miles of it) reveals very different shorelines: busy resort strips, quiet state park beaches, windswept Nevada desert, and the extraordinary geological accident of Emerald Bay.
