Royal Gorge is the Lake Tahoe region's big Nordic-skiing answer to the alpine resorts: a broad cross-country area near Soda Springs with groomed trails spread across high Sierra terrain. It is a commercial resort, but the scale and setting lift it above an ordinary operator. On a good snow day, the draw is the rhythm of skiing through forest and meadow, with warming huts and long views breaking up the effort.
It works best for travellers who want a quieter winter day than downhill skiing at Palisades or Heavenly. Check conditions before committing, since the experience depends heavily on snowpack and grooming. Beginners can take lessons and rent gear, while stronger skiers can make a proper day of the longer trail systems.
