Palomar Observatory sits high in the mountains south of Temecula, far enough from town to feel like a proper expedition into the backcountry. Its great draw is the Hale Telescope, a 200-inch instrument that helped define 20th-century observational astronomy and still gives the place a serious scientific presence.
Visitors come for the dome, the mountain air, and the sense of standing inside one of California's great research landmarks. Check public access before driving up, as weather, operations, and maintenance can affect what is open; even then, the road and setting make the trip worthwhile for science-minded travelers.
