The birthplace of Los Angeles — a pedestrianized lane in El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument lined with colorful Mexican market stalls, restaurants, and the 1818 Avila Adobe, the city's oldest surviving building. It's touristy, yes, but it's one of the few places in the city where you can feel the Mexican roots beneath the Hollywood gloss. The tamales and horchata are reliable.
