Cal Poly Humboldt sits on a hillside at the north end of Arcata, where the campus merges directly into Redwood Park — a 790-acre city forest with old-growth redwood groves that begins literally where the quad ends. The campus itself is modest in scale but pleasantly walkable, and the Natural History Museum near the main entrance is worth a brief visit.
The university, originally founded in 1913 as a teacher's college, is best known for its programs in environmental science, marine biology, and natural resources — fields that make particular sense given the surrounding landscape. The redesignation to polytechnic in 2022 has brought new ambitions and new construction. Non-students are welcome to walk the grounds, use the Redwood Park trailhead, and visit the museum and dining facilities.
