Brother Jonathan Park / Tsunami Memorial

Address 6th Street and A Street, Crescent City, CA 95531

A small park at the north end of Crescent City's harbor marks two overlapping maritime disasters. The Brother Jonathan memorial commemorates the 1865 wreck of the paddle steamer Brother Jonathan off Point St. George — 225 people drowned, making it one of the worst maritime disasters in Pacific Coast history. The adjacent memorial marks the 1964 tsunami that swept through Crescent City following the Good Friday earthquake in Alaska, killing eleven people and destroying much of the town.

The park is small but the views of the harbor and the offshore rocks where sea lions haul out are worth the short walk from the harbor area. Interpretive panels explain both events.
