Eureka Theater

1939 Art Moderne cinema in the heart of Old Town

The Eureka Theater at 612 F Street is an Art Moderne cinema built in 1939, its streamlined curves and neon signage sitting in deliberate contrast to the Victorian buildings around it. The theater has been in near-continuous operation since opening, and its vertical blade sign and original facade are among the best-preserved examples of 1930s movie-house design on the California coast.

The interior has been restored and the theater still hosts films and occasional live performances. Even if nothing is showing, the exterior is worth a stop on any walk through Old Town. The neon is best seen in the early evening as the fog comes in.

A story
The theater opened in 1939 in the Art Moderne style — all streamlined curves and chrome detailing — as an intentional counterpoint to the Victorian buildings surrounding it. The interior neon and the vertical blade sign out front have been preserved largely intact, making it one of the most complete examples of 1930s movie-house design on the North Coast.
