The LAB Anti-Mall

The LAB Anti-Mall is a converted industrial complex on Bristol Street that exists as a conscious alternative to the shopping behemoth across town. Independent clothing boutiques, a bookshop, restaurants, and gallery spaces occupy the former manufacturing buildings, arranged around outdoor courtyards with murals and informal seating.

The atmosphere is relaxed and the tenants change more often than at a conventional mall. It connects to The Camp, a similar outdoor shopping complex next door that leans toward outdoor lifestyle and health-food retailers. Together they make the Bristol Street corridor one of the more interesting retail stretches in Orange County.

A story
The LAB was developed in 1993 in deliberate opposition to South Coast Plaza. Its founders converted a former industrial complex specifically to attract the kind of independent retailers and galleries that could not afford — or would not fit — in a conventional mall. The name is a contraction of "Little American Business."
