Fashion Island

Fashion Island is an open-air upscale shopping mall in the centre of the inland part of Newport Beach. It was one of the first regional shopping centres in California designed as outdoor courtyards rather than enclosed boxes, and it has worn the format better than most. Roman fountains, fan palms, and koi ponds give it a distinctly Southern Californian air.

The tenant mix is high-end: Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, Saks Fifth Avenue, plus the full set of luxury fashion houses. Eating-out options around the centre include the original Newport Beach branches of several California chain restaurants. The Tom Van Sant wind chime in the central plaza is one of the more surprising public artworks in any American mall.

A story
The giant wind-chime sculpture at the centre of the mall, designed by Tom Van Sant in 1967, was once listed as the largest in the world. The five steel pipes, each more than 50 feet long, ring at different intervals on Pacific Ocean breezes — a deliberately gentle counterpoint to the consumerism around them.
