Audium

The world's only theatre built specifically for sculpted sound experiences

Address 1616 Bush St

Audium is unlike anything else in San Francisco -- or anywhere. The small theatre on Bush Street was built in 1967 specifically for "sound sculpture": you sit in complete darkness while 176 speakers arranged across the floor, walls, and ceiling move sound around and through you. The compositions are created by mixing natural sounds, electronic tones, and found audio into immersive, disorienting, sometimes unsettling hour-long experiences.

It is not for everyone, but if you are curious about the edges of art and perception, this is extraordinary. Shows are limited and seats are few, so book in advance. No phones, no talking, no light -- just you and the sound.
