Harvey Milk Plaza sits above the Castro Muni station at the intersection of Castro and Market streets, marking the gateway to the neighbourhood. A giant rainbow flag -- one of the largest in the city -- flies overhead, and the plaza serves as a gathering point for marches, vigils, and celebrations. It is named for Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States, who was assassinated in 1978.
From here, walk south down Castro Street past the Rainbow Honor Walk -- a series of bronze sidewalk plaques honouring LGBTQ figures including Alan Turing, Frida Kahlo, James Baldwin, and Freddie Mercury. The walk stretches from the plaza to 19th Street and continues expanding.
