Federal Office Building

The Federal Office Building is a sober 1930s Civic Center landmark by Arthur Brown Jr., the architect behind San Francisco City Hall. It is not a place to plan a special trip around, but the exterior rounds out a walk through the city's Beaux-Arts government district.

Look at it together with City Hall, the Asian Art Museum, and the other public buildings around Civic Center. The value is in the ensemble: a moment when San Francisco tried to give federal, state, and city power a shared architectural language.
