The Lyon Street Steps climb the steep eastern edge of the Presidio along the border between Pacific Heights and Cow Hollow, and the reward at the top is one of the best free views in San Francisco — out over the Palace of Fine Arts, the Marina, the bay, and across to the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin headlands. The balustraded staircase is flanked by manicured hedges and the gardens of some of the city's most expensive homes.
It has become a favourite of fitness fanatics who run the roughly 300 steps as a workout, so expect company, especially at weekends. Go in the morning for the clearest light and the calmest crowds. Combine it with a wander through the surrounding streets of Pacific Heights mansions and a walk down to the Palace of Fine Arts below.
