Mission Dolores Park

The city's favourite sunny hangout, with downtown views and people-watching

Address Dolores St and 19th St

Dolores Park is where San Francisco goes to soak up the sun. On a warm weekend afternoon, up to 10,000 people spread across the sloping lawns -- picnicking, playing, sunbathing, and taking in the view of the downtown skyline framed by palm trees. The park sits in the Mission's sunny microclimate, which means it can be glorious here while the rest of the city shivers in fog.

The south side of the park has the best views, tennis courts, a playground, and dog areas. The J Church Muni line runs along the western edge. Bring a blanket, something to eat, and nowhere to be -- this is one of the best urban parks in America for pure people-watching.

A story
The park sits on the site of a former Jewish cemetery. After the 1906 earthquake, it served as a refugee camp for more than 1,600 families whose homes had been destroyed.
