Ocean Beach

Five-mile beach along SF's western edge, popular with surfers

Ocean Beach is San Francisco's largest beach, stretching five miles along the city's entire western edge. The northern section near the Cliff House is popular with locals, surfers in wetsuits, and visitors. The beach hosts a yearly sand sculpture contest and its gentle slope makes it ideal for wading.

The southern end is quieter, often deserted, with windswept dunes and the abandoned Fort Funston military garrison. Muni bus 18 runs the length of the beach, and the N Judah line stops two blocks south of Golden Gate Park.
