The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art reopened in 2016 after a major expansion that tripled its gallery space, making it one of the largest modern art museums in the country. The collection spans painting, sculpture, photography, and new media, with strong holdings in postwar American art.
Even if you are not a dedicated art lover, the building itself -- designed by Mario Botta with a striking striped facade -- is worth seeing. The upper-floor terraces offer nice views of the downtown skyline.
