Sing Fat Building and Sing Chong Building

The Sing Fat and Sing Chong buildings face each other at California Street and Grant Avenue, marking one of Chinatown's most photographed corners. Both were rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake in the pagoda-topped style that helped define the neighbourhood's public image.

They are quick exterior stops, but useful ones: the buildings show how Chinatown's merchants turned architecture into a statement of survival, commerce, and identity after the disaster.
