Mission San Rafael Arcangel was founded in 1817 as an asistencia, or auxiliary mission, to Mission Dolores in San Francisco before becoming the twentieth of California's twenty-one missions.
The present chapel is a reconstruction, but the site remains a useful stop for travellers following the California mission trail or exploring downtown San Rafael. Its small museum and historic setting make it more than a quick plaque stop.
